Agroforestry Climate Resilience, West Bengal

Agroforestry Climate Resilience, West Bengal

This project aims to provide additional income and livelihood support to smallholders farmers of Jharkhand by helping them undertake plantation of native tree species. The fundamental goal is to empower smallholder farmers by facilitating agroforestry-based carbon credit generation. We are active in 4-5 districts of Jharkhand, developing detailed financial models, registering the project, and establishing MRV systems to assist approximately 10,000 farmers in adopting agroforestry practices. The project will be implemented in stages, beginning with 500 pilot farmers in the first year and progressively expanding to include 10,000 farmers over the next four years. Furthermore, this effort would improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers by allowing them to generate additional revenue through the sale of fruits produced by the trees planted. In addition to mobilizing climate finance, the project will prioritise compliance with environmental and social safeguards to ensure zero adverse effects on biodiversity and local communities.

The project supports the execution of an agro-forestry project on 5,000 hectares of land distributed over three districts in the Indian state of West Bengal: Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar. The pool of beneficiaries is estimated to include 1500 smallholder farmers residing across 200 villages. The project directly targets smallholder farmers by providing them with the resources, skills, and practises needed to engage in agroforestry and regenerative agriculture, as well as developing efficient supply chains. The revenue generated from the sale of carbon credits and supplementary products goes back to these farmers.
Clean Energy
Cooking

Clean Energy Cooking

Improved cook stoves (ICS) help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by consuming less fuel than traditional (three stone fire) stoves. The objective of this project is to provide Improved Cook Stove (ICS) devices to ~2,000 homes that currently use conventional stoves. While fulfilling these households' clean cooking needs, this initiative will also yield Greenhouse Gas (GHG, or Carbon) mitigation advantages. The project is to be conducted in the states listed: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
